  Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans

Madeline, the first book in series about the spunky main character involved in different adventures, is written entirely in rhyme. It is a story about twelve girls live in an old house in Paris covered with vines, and they walk in two straight lines wherever they go. Madeline, the smallest but not the least, is absolutely NOT afraid of tigers or mice. Then their routine is interrupted by a late-night rush to the hospital--Madeline has to have her appendix out! After the operation, Miss Clavel, the nun who cares for them, brings the girls to visit. Madeline has many gifts and flowers--but likes her scar on her stomach best of all. The story ends with the other girls crying, "Boohoo, we want to have our appendix out, too!"

This classic story also has countless series books… Madeline Book List, television shows and cartoons on DVD, audio books, games and puzzles available to expand learning if a child gets “hooked” to Madeline =) It is amazing how much children LOVE this series…so much so that Ludwig Bemelmans’ grandson continues to publish new books in the series to this day…

Five In A Row Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans – Many Years Ago

I already had the pleasure of teaching this book to my older crop of kids who are highschoolers now!!!

We had fun discussing symmetry and the artwork, we found symmetry EVERYWHERE!

The best part was I had my friend who my kids called “Auntie Mita” who LOVED the french language.

She read them Madeline in FRENCH….and we recorded it on cassette tape (boy has things changed). The kids were elated.

I don’t remember much else but I am sure it will come to me when I peek at some great blogs that are critical for my teaching success. God of course is the pilot!

Madeline - Plan of Attack

One of the topics I’d like to really discuss is PARIS, FRANCE….oh my goodness…I could camp out right there. I went to Paris with my hubby right about the time Americans were dumping French Fries AND  I had family telling me “Don’t go !!!! on your rare opportunity to visit France for a week….stay home…they don’t like Americans”  We went, it was fine and we had a blast!!

I just spent 30min trying to find my old photos….we will see about that later

Paris culture, art, french breads, and language are going to be fun…..esp if I find my pics….(please Lord)

This compilation really helps me when I teach so I can grab these resources “on the fly” enjoy=)

We did lapbooks for Make Way for Ducklings because the kids were soooo into them. So I will also consider a mini-lapbook…

3) ANOTHER BLOG I always like to check for Five In A Row Books is The Homeschool Mom .  In her survey I found these items to investigate:

Madeline.com
The official Madeline website for Ludwig Bemelmans' classic Madeline children's books which have been loved by three generations.

French and Family - Unit on French language and culture: "Young children are fascinated, though sometimes a bit frightened, by cultures different from their own. They are also at a stage of development when it's exciting and relatively easy to acquire new vocabulary."

KidsReads.com
The site includes info for many book series; this page leads to Ludwig Bemelmans' author page. Links on the left will take you to other relevant pages, including characters, books in the series, trivia, and more.
